Is the river pearl mussel still found in Denmark – and where are the remaining populations? We are investigating this using environmental DNA (eDNA) in a project funded by the Aage V Jensen Foundation and Varde Municipality.
Last week (week 36) we visited Holme Å, which is a stream located in Jutland that leads into Varde Å, to investigate whether there are any remaining populations of the river pearl mussel, which could form fertile ground for a re-establishment of the species on the recently restored part of Holme Å. Read more about the restoration here. We collected water samples at 9 locations in Holme Å and further locations in Varde Å. The samples have now been sent to the laboratory where they will be analyzed.
