Marine Messages III (MM3) was published online Friday 17 July 2026 at the European Environment Agency’s (EEA) Eionet Portal.
Marine Messages III is a European-wide synthesis assessment based on the most recent European‑wide marine datasets. MM3 integrates findings across EU marine directives (MSFD, WFD, N2K, etc) and Regional Seas Conventions. Further, MM3 presents a “state, pressures, and solution» framework for the future of Europe’s seas though integrated, data- and tool-based cross‑directive analysis. The data sets used are second-to-none and the results of the analyses made are accordingly stronger that the outcomes of single-directive analyses. The perhaps strongest part of MM3 is not the data-driven analyses (state and pressures) but its review focusing on solutions, which could turn out to become a catalogue all EU Member States should consider where revising their Programmes of Measures under the MSFD and WFD.
