Nordic Network for Women and Gender-Diverse People in Marine and Freshwater Aquatic Science

.

Strengthening inclusion and collaboration across the Nordic marine research community.

.

A new professional network is forming across Denmark, Greenland, and the Faroe Islands to strengthen inclusion, visibility, and collaboration among women and gender-diverse researchers in marine and freshwater aquatic sciences.

Launched at Havforskermøde 2026, the network provides space for shared experiences, mentorship, and interdisciplinary exchange.

All researchers working in marine and freshwater aquatic fields are invited to join as we work together to promote equitable opportunities and foster new perspectives across aquatic sciences.

.

Why This Network Matters

Women and gender-diverse researchers continue to be underrepresented in marine and freshwater aquatic sciences, particularly in leadership positions and technical specializations. Strengthening diversity is not only a matter of equity: it is essential for cultivating new insights, broadening problem-solving approaches, and addressing the increasingly complex pressures facing marine ecosystems.

To help promote meaningful and sustained change, Ellen Johannesen (NIVA Denmark), Paulina Ramírez-Monsalve (associate, NIVA Denmark), and Josefin Ekstedt (Centre for Blue Governance, Aalborg University) are supporting the development of a new Nordic network for women and gender-diverse people in marine research, launched in connection with Havforskermøde 2026

Origins at Havforskermøde 2026

The initiative grows out of Session 16: Increasing gender equality in marine research and fostering alternative problem-solving approaches, that will be held during Havforskermøde 2026. The session will highlight current disparities in representation, the structural barriers faced by researchers, and the importance of building communities where people can share experiences, strategies, and opportunities.

Featuring keynote contributions from Karen Ellemann, General Secretary of the Nordic Council of Ministers, and Valentina Melli, Researcher in Fisheries Technology at DTU Aqua and Project Leader of the Horizon Europe project ECO-CATCH. Through open discussion, early-career perspectives, and interactive engagement, attendees will identify a shared need for a collaborative and supportive professional community that endures beyond the meeting itself.

What the Network Offers

The network aims to:

🌊Strengthen connections among women and gender-diverse researchers within Nordic marine and freshwater research institutions.

🌊Create spaces for exchange on career development, leadership, and research pathways.

🌊Foster interdisciplinary dialogue on inclusive and innovative approaches to marine and freshwater science.

🌊Support visibility and representation in fieldwork, technical roles, and decision-making contexts.

🌊Promote equitable participation through mentorship, peer networks, and shared resources.

By connecting researchers at all career stages—from students and early-career scientists to senior experts—the network seeks to contribute to a more inclusive and dynamic research landscape.
